The FedEx truck hit the 18-year-old’s vehicle along Interstate 81 at mile marker 88.6 in Union Township around 12:16 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, according to a release by state police.
The unnamed 50-year-old trucker had left his lane prior to hitting the teenager’s vehicle— he then continued to cross the highway and rolled over— he was trapped and despite EMS rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, the release shows.
The man was hauling tandem trailers when he crashed, according to police, but it is unclear if the twin trailers contributed to the crash.
There was a passenger in his vehicle at the time of the crash who was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, state police say.
The 18-year-old woman driving the other vehicle involved in the crash was not injured, according to the release.
I-81 was shut down at exit 85 for several hours and detours were put in place during the crash investigation as emergency crews cleared the scene, the release concludes.
